Chapter Eight

“YOU GOT THIS FOR ME?” Shay stood in the area Finn had blocked off on his desk, next to the art studio he’d set up. He’d put the easel on the table next to the box of pencil leads then posed the doll on a pair of rolled up socks.

“I thought you might enjoying having something else to do besides playing with the phone.”

“I would.” Shay glanced up. “But I still want to play with the phone.”

“Of course.” Finn pointed to the artist doll. “Can you move him around on your own?”

“Let me see.” Shay managed to put the doll into several poses. “He’s a little heavy, but I can manage.”

“He’s almost as big as you.”

“But he’s wooden.” Shay knocked against the doll’s head. “And it’s kind of like having a friend.”

“Are you lonely?”

“No.” Shay shook his head but looked away quickly.

“We’ll find a way to get you full size.”

“I know.” Shay moved over to the box of lead. “What’s this?”

“They’re for a mechanical pencil. I checked, though. It’s graphite. Not real lead. I didn’t want you to get sick.”

“You’re sweet.”

“Yeah, well, you deserve it.” Finn handed him some toilet paper he’d cut into small squares. “You can use this to hold the pencil lead, if you want to keep your hands clean. I also got this.” He put a tiny baggy on the table. “It has some squares cut off a makeup wipe.”

“From Charlotte?”

“Yeah.”

“She’s so very kind.”

“She really is.” Finn could do a lot worse than emulating Charlotte.

“Can’t imagine her as an emo. All that blonde hair black? Just doesn’t seem right.”

“I can’t imagine it either.” Finn laughed suddenly.

“What?”

“Just, I think everyone goes through phases when they’re young. I once grew my hair long and tried to grow a beard.”

“How’d that go?”

“My hair looked great but my patchy beard made me look like I had mange.”

“Got a picture?”

“Oh, yeah,” Finn said flippantly. “I always keep pictures of my shame.”

“Show me.”

“Sarcasm, buddy. I don’t have any pictures of myself from back then.” Finn considered. “I’ll bet my mother does, though. She keeps pictures of everything. All digital too. With, like, eight backups.”

“Will I get to meet her?”

Finn sat there, unsure how to answer.

“It’s okay.” Shay put a piece of paper on the easel. “You don’t have to show me to everyone you know. It’s enough I got to meet Charlotte and Vicky.”

“It’s not that I don’t—”

A knock at the door pulled his attention away. “I’ll be right back.” Finn covered Shay up then hobbled over to the door.

“Hey!” Charlotte entered with Vicky right behind her. “We come bearing gifts.”

Vicky glanced around.

“Javier isn’t here.” Finn ushered them in.

“I can’t believe he hasn’t noticed Shay.” Vicky laughed quietly to herself.

“He’s not really here very much, except to study and sleep.” Finn closed the door.

“Where is Shay?” Charlotte asked.

“Over here.” Finn hopped over to the desk and removed the cover.

“Hi, Shay!” Charlotte offered out her pinky.

“Hey, Charlotte. Hey Vicky.” Shay lifted his arms to Finn.

Carefully, Finn picked him up and placed him against his chest.
